Fernando H. Ocampo

About

Fernando H. Ocampo (1897 to 1984) was a pioneer of modern architecture in the Philippines and one of the founders of the country's architectural profession. Educated at the University of Santo Tomas and the University of Pennsylvania, he trained briefly with Ballinger and Perrot in Philadelphia before returning to Manila to practice.

He is best remembered for designing the postwar reconstruction of the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, the eighth and current structure on the site, completed in the 1950s after wartime destruction. His other works include the UST Central Seminary, the Calvo Building on Escolta, and numerous commercial and residential commissions across Manila.

In 1927 Ocampo established the firm Arguelles and Ocampo with architect Tomas Arguelles, and he helped found the Philippine Institute of Architects alongside Juan M. Arellano. He also taught at the University of Santo Tomas School of Architecture, shaping a generation of Filipino designers.
