About
Pablo S. Antonio (1901-1975) was declared National Artist of the Philippines for Architecture in 1976, the second architect to receive the honour. Educated in London, he returned to introduce a lean, functional modernism defined by clean lines, plain surfaces and bold rectangular masses, often carrying a strong Art Deco character.
His best known work is the Far Eastern University campus in Manila, an Art Deco ensemble built from the late 1930s through the 1950s that later received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage honourable mention. Earlier, his Ideal Theater on Avenida Rizal (1933) announced a new streamlined language for the commercial city, and his apartment and residential blocks near Manila Bay brought the same crisp geometry to everyday buildings.
Antonio designed for the tropical climate, favouring natural light and cross ventilation long before they became fashionable. His disciplined, unornamented buildings helped set the course of prewar and postwar Philippine modern architecture and remain touchstones of the movement.
