What they do
Conrad Onglao is a Philippine architect and principal of C.T. Onglao Architects, known for a restrained "quiet luxury" approach to high-end residential design. He sums it up as "Keep It Simple," a principle absorbed during years in the United States, and works through values of simplicity, balance, scale, timelessness and proportion, and counts Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Bilbao among the works he admires.
Onglao studied chemistry before earning his architecture degree at the University of Santo Tomas, then spent fifteen years as an architect and interior designer in the United States before returning to Manila. His portfolio leans toward high-profile residential work, including his 2008 redesign of Bahay Pangarap, the presidential residence across the Pasig from Malacañang.
His own weekend home, Casa Esperanza in Lucban, Quezon, is a self-described "Filipino Farmhouse": built on stilts with high ceilings, hidden vents for passive ventilation and repurposed yakal wood, set near the base of Mount Banahaw and featured in a Tatler Homes home tour.
